Web hosting for rails (Discussion)

Michael Campagnaro saidSat, 29 Nov 2008 21:47:49 -0000 ( Link )

Hey guys, I’ve been learning rails and I want to move it over to a website, but I’m having a lot of difficulties finding a decent web hosting service.

The problem I have is that I either come across something that is very cheap and low quality, or very expensive but high quality. I’m sure some of you have a website so I’d love to hear your recommendations or it would be great if someone can point me to a website that has legitimate reviews/discussions on this topic.

Thanks!

It depends on what you are planning on hosting. Hosting Rails apps can cost more than hosting PHP apps, due to Ruby’s higher memory requirements.

For things like blogs, Dreamhost is a good bet. If you need something more, Planet Argon’s Boxcar lite might suit your needs.

Hmm, thanks for the suggestions. I might have to go with Dreamhost since Boxcar is a bit over my budget at the moment.

I’m not trying to make a blog…rather I want to have a sandbox site to showcase my projects. I’ll keep searching around though. Thanks again!

I’d recommend something like slicehost, especially for sandboxing. Starting at 20 bucks a month, you get your own (virtual) server which you can do whatever you want with. You get to choose the linux distro (usually the one you’re most comfortable with already) and can literally install anything you want on it.

I’ve had great luck with them so far. Another similar highly-recommended provider is mediatemple.

Ah yes, slicehost looks like an excellent service. As cheap as $20 is, I’m a student living off government loans…so in other words, that’s too expensive :P

I ended up going with http://www.fusednetwork.com/ and got a good deal with a promotional code. They just recently installed rails on their servers so I’ll test them out.

    Thanks rfunduk
